Hello wormfolks, this month marks a significant date for The Urban Worm CIC as we celebrate our 10th birthday on the 11th June. Although we started out on our worm journey in 2013, it wasn’t until 2016 that The Urban Worm became an official Community Interest Company. We’ve had our growing pains, growth spurts and deep lessons, and no doubt there will be many more to come, but we wouldn’t change this journey for the world, and here’s to many more birthdays to come. Thank you dear worm enthusiast for being on this journey with us! 🥳 🎂 🎉

Groundswell

The worms have turned at Groundswell Regenerative Farming Festival. As some of you seasoned readers may remember we had to sadly decline the invitation to speak last year due to conflicting engagements but its now firmly in the diary, and we are proud to share we are now scheduled for 15:45-16:30pm on Thursday 2nd July, speaking with pioneer farmer Tom Fairfax in the Soil Medic Tent. Sending enormous gratitude and thanks to the fabulous Land Gardeners for hosting, and for the invite, it is a real honour. And there is no greater pleasure than being in a field surrounded by thousands of souls who love worms and microbes as much as you do, you know you’re in fine company...

Open Farm Sunday
|
|
|
If you are looking for a free family day out FarmEco is opening its doors to the public for national Open Farm Sunday 7th June 9am-4pm. Since it's also Worm HQ we couldn't miss the opportunity to talk worms all day. This Open Farm Sunday is a special one at the farm as it hosts its first pop-up Farmers Market giving you the opportunity to support your local farmers and empower the local economy, whilst having a snoop around the farm at the same time. We will be selling our first harvest from the CFT so if you are in the market for healthy soil you know where to come.

Keeping your soil alive and kicking (swimming is more appropriate as microbes swim, they don’t walk!) this summer couldn't be easier if you’ve got your own supply of worm poo. Worm poo is teeming with all the nutrients and biology plants need.
|
How to Make your Own Worm Tea
|
1. Harvest one handful of worm poo
2. Place in a watering can of rainwater, or dechlorinated water
3. Brew for at least 2 hours (no more than 24hours) , stirring occasionally.
4. Feed to plants.
5. Relax and let the microbes work their magic.

You can also catch us at Wirksworth Farmers Market Saturday 6th June and Newark Market on Saturday 13th June where we will be selling our freshly harvested Magic Manure and spreading the word.

Worm Vibrations
|
|
|
We’ve said it before, worm people are good people (that’s you we're talking about!). To care for the worms is to hold an intrinsic care for humanity, and we love to connect with the humanitarians! We had the pleasure to host Heidi and Andy who travelled all the way from Dartford in Kent to attend The Urban Worm Ultimate Dual Compost Workshop. Heidi has been a long-time supporter of The Urban Worm and has been the proud owner of a Wheelie Bin Worm Farm for more than 7 years, and she was one of our 1000 Worm Farmers too. Already experienced worm farmers, Heidi and Andy plan to set up a vermicomposting operation in the next stage of their worklife, and came to us for some upscaling insights. We wish them every success, and hope to be sharing their journey with you in the future. Thank you to Heidi and Andy, what a lovely day with the compost!

We Love You Charlie
|
|
Being asked to speak at an event where your favourite celebrity gardener will also be speaking feels like a very special birthday present. This year we are talking worms at the Derbyshire Flower and Garden Show 29th and 30th August and we cannot believe our good fortune that the legendess Charlie Dimmock will also be speaking too.
|
|
We do have a Charlie Dimmock signed up to New Worm Order News but have never been sure if they're the real deal, so Charlie, if its you please send us a sign! We don’t have our time slot just yet but we will be there all weekend so do come and find us - and we'll let you know the precise details when we do.
|

Compost Masters Album
|
|
|
|
|
Another fabulous month has been had with team Pulp Friction - we are now half way through (where has the time gone?!) our Compost Masters course funded by Awards for All National Lottery Community Fund and the JN Derbyshire Trust and we now have some serious worm farmers in the making. From worm breeding to bokashi the team are being equipped with all the tools of the trade. We have especially enjoyed having Moka recently join us to bring us extra smiles, a hand stitched creation of one of the highly talented and super sweet members, Issie.

Having this opportunity to share our space and host members has been a delight, and there is rarely a dull moment at Worm HQ. As part of the programme the team are supporting the wider community at FarmEco as every afternoon we feed freshly brewed worm tea to the Stan and Nancy Community Garden, helping to get those beneficial microbes into the soil for plants to thrive and live their best lives.
