Dear Friends
Welcome to The Urban Worm newsletter, and thank you so much for joining us, for believing in the humble but mighty worm!

Welcome friends to a not-so-sunny November, we hope to bring a little light in replacement of the sun. This constant blanket of grey cloud cover is starting to take its emotional and physical toll. If you are feeling it too we have found that spending a little extra time with the worms helps a lot (must be the mycobacterium!)

Leaves of Life
The best thing about this time of year is the bounty of worm food everywhere. Fallen leaves provide a great carbon source for the worms, they love the stuff. A healthy worm farm has a balance of nitrogen rich âgreensâ to feed bacteria (kitchen waste, greens, coffee, and animal manures) and a âbrownâ carbon source for feeding fungi (cardboard, leaves, woodchip, straw). Now is the perfect time to get out there with some bin bags and hoard some quality carbons for the year ahead.

A Little Reminder
Speaking of food... we all need a little reminder now and then that there are amazing souls dedicated to creating a world that is socially, ecologically and economically just, and the Nottinghamshire Food Summit did just that. From community kitchens and gardens to surplus sharing groups there are leaders filling in the gaps where the system is falling short, a system where only a sobering 1 in 10 children in the UK are receiving their 5-a-day. The global industrial food system has long failed us and there is much to be done, but knowing there are change makers out there is of some hope and comfort.
|
|
|
Growing of much as our own food as possible, and supporting local chemical-free producers are direct actions we can take in empowering a decentralized food system and freeing ourselves from dependency on the big guys.
|
A shout out also to Pulp Friction for supplying a delicious lunch as always - Jill Carter at Pulp Friction is a superstar and of course thank you to Nottinghamshire County Council for getting us all together in one room to make the magic happen.

The Art of Worms
If you are looking to treat yourself or someone very special to a unique worm inspired piece of art we may have exactly what you need. We love Igor's work and have a few of his beautiful prints adorning the walls, so it was a welcome surprise and a huge honour when he reached out to share this new print specially designed for readers of the New Worm Order - a big thank you to Igor. This is and original linocut using the Japanese Gyotaku technique, with impressions of real leaves of Ginkgo biloba, Canadian maple, Aspen and Oak, surrounded by earthworms. Each leaf and each earthworm is individual and printed separately.

One For The Photo Album

|
Sharing the magic of worms with the little ones always gives us our fill of joy, and thanks to The Social Action Hub weâve got some new very excitable little worm farmers in the world. Vital life skills development during the half term can only be a good thing, it is never too early to nurture. May the worms go on to live long and happy lives, with a little help from Mum and Dad of course.
