Dear Friends

Welcome to The Urban Worm newsletter, and thank you so much for joining us, for believing in the humble but mighty worm!

A Force for Good

Another pin on the worm map for the glorious Lake District thanks to Cumbria Action for Sustainability, and the driving force for vermiculture in Cumbria Roe Baker. Although Roe is no longer with the team she has certainly left a legacy and we are beyond grateful to have the opportunities to travel with the worms to places of such outstanding beauty, we really are living the dream. Whilst the worms don’t know it their newest residence at Force Café is in a pretty spectacular spot right next to a waterfall, and with a terrace view to boast about. As a business dedicated to preserving the natural environment we know the worms will receive all the love they deserve at Force Café.

Force Café now joins Tebay Services, Growing Well and Alpacaly Ever After on the list of businesses embracing the power of the worm in the county.

Ashfield’s Got Worms

It’s official, the worms are turning. We know a shift is happening when district councils embrace the worm love. We would like to say a huge thank you to the wonderful Wellbeing team at Ashfield District Council for supporting a day of workshops last month, and despite the intermittent rain we had a great turnout, with lots of new happy little worm farmers sent on their way with a newfound appreciation for the humble but mighty worm. District councils hold significant power to instigate true lasting change, and although we undoubtably have a long way to go, it is a promising step in the right direction.

Good Vibes Only

Exciting times for growing your own in Nottingham. Roots Allotments have arrived at a new site in Ruddington and it was an absolute privilege to be invited to the grand opening to share the worm love, the good vibes were high. People want to grow, and national allotment waiting lists prove this with some waiting lists up to 25 years. To solve this dilemma a small group of dedicated people have pioneered a movement to address the problem, and they’ve cultivated community at the same time. With allotments sites now in Sheffield, Leeds, Croydon, Stourbridge, Bathford, Bath and Bristol the movement is thriving and nothing can stop its growth. With a no-dig & no chemicals policy only good things can happen. All power to Roots Allotments for being the change, and we look forward to delivering future workshops onsite.

The Worm Palace

Now, we don’t typically like to boast but considering we have made the most beautiful worm farm the world has ever seen we think on this occasion it is granted. A development from The Worm Palace mark 1 made for Westfield London last year, we have upped our game, and it really has been a team effort of craftsmanship. Undoubtably the beauty of worm farming is that it can be practiced on a shoe string budget, and the worms are none the wiser, however we also think they deserve a little glory, and The Worm Palace demands some attention and adoration.
If you would like to see this piece of art in the flesh you can come and see The Worm Palace at Gannets Café at Middlebeck Newark in Nottinghamshire. Earlier this year we reached out to Urban & Civic to discuss our ideas on how we can incorporate vermiculture into new housing developments, and they absolutely loved the idea. The development is still in its early stages, with 500 homes built of the 3000 planned through to 2029. The Worm Palace at Gannets Café is at the heart of the new development, and we hope will be the first of many more to come, sowing the seeds for vermiculture to flourish in this new community. A huge thank you to Urban & Civic and Gannets Café for joining the New Worm Order, happy to have you onboard for the journey with us.
