Welcome friends old and new to August’s New Worm Order News. After a peculiarly cloudy start the weather man tells us we are going to be granted something that resembles a British summer, finally. Maintaining high morale under a grey veil of cloud has been a challenge, but we are now on the sunny side.

The Way of The Worm
Sharing the joy of worms with the next generation lays the foundation for hope, and instilling the importance and value of soil health in our children promises to build a future where ecological harmony is at the heart. We are grateful to Erewash Museum for hosting a day of back-to-back workshops where we had the opportunity to train 45 mini worm farmers - and their parents - in the ways of the worm. By the end of the day we were well and truly wormed out, but it was worth every minute. Thank you to everyone who came, we had a full house for every session, you were fabulous. We trust the worms will bring the families a lifetime of joy, and a steady supply of free organic fertiliser.
District councils have the power to engage and support residents in the way of the worm that has far reaching economic and ecological benefits. By equipping citizens with the knowledge and tools to transform their waste into wealth we reduce the need for polluting and costly transportation, whilst building soil health and thriving ecosystems. We are very excited to be working with Ashfield District Council this month where we will be attending Ashfield Show on Saturday 10th August to share the worm love. We will be in the Feel Good Families marquee if you want to come and say hello. We will also be delivering workshops on the 20th August at Harcourt Street Allotments, Kirby.

We Are Mycelium
Worms are like mycelium, the great connectors networking community activists and inspirational people who are busy making the magic happen, and we are always grateful when they are brought to our door. A few months ago Jon from Myco Manchester, a community mushroom farm and workers co-operative, reached out looking for 35 DIY Wheelie Bin Conversion Kits for community projects with funding support from Manchester Climate Agency. Amongst the proud guardians of a Wheelie Bin Worm Farm are Beswick Urban Growers (which is part of The East Manchester Academy) and Wilbraham Primary, with more group sessions planned over the summer. Thank you Jon for sharing the mushroom and worm love. We know the worms will be cherished.

Worm Salon
We’ve delivered worm farms to some seemingly unlikely customers in our time, and this one is no exception. Worms have a place in every business, and that includes the hairdressers. In addition to a balance diet worms will happily eat through your hair, yes it’s true, if its natural the worms will eat it. Thank you Kylie for embracing the worms, and its always a quirky talking point to share with clients in the chair!

Sparkling houseplants
Not exactly worm related but if you love worms, we assume you love plants too and wish only for them to thrive. Well, we have discovered a little gardening hack - plants absolutely love carbonated water, and since treating our house plants to a bit of sparkly they are positively blooming. Carbon Dioxide is essential for life, playing a key role in photosynthesis so this totally makes sense. Many years back we met a lovely lady at a community event in Nottingham who told us she fed her plants with sparkling water to keep them thriving, and after a little research it turns out she was on the money! Thank you to that lovely lady for sharing, and we got there in the end. Here is a little article we came across to support this very useful discovery.

That’s a wrap for this month friends, and as always thank you for your support. Have a wonderful August, and remember the sun is always shining for you. Keep yourselves, and your worms well hydrated, and be sure to keep the worms in a shady spot whilst this little hot spell sticks around.
